The Simple Manifesto #5 – Simplify home tasks

simplemanifesto

This is part of our series on The Simple Living Manifesto. We invite you to join us on the journey.

The fifth idea in the manifesto is:

Simplify home tasks. In that vein, think about all the stuff you do at home. Sometimes our home task list is just as long as our work list. And we’ll never get that done either. So focus on the most important, and try to find ways to eliminate the other tasks (automate, eliminate, delegate, or hire help).

With two new boys at home you suddenly realize the importance of simplifying everything we can. We’re learning as we go (one week in) but can I just say, these 2 tools are already a lifesaver?

An apple wedger from Pampered Chef and a peeler from SwissPro, which was an impulse buy after a convincing presentation at the State Fair of Texas (one of the very few impulse buys I’m still happy with).

Ideally part of simplifying is reducing tools that only have one use — which would put this apple wedger on the chopping block — but this apple wedger is such a time saver. Place the wedger on the top of the apple, press down and instantly the apple is cored and separated into 10 easy slices.

And the peeler is an absolute time saver for peeling vegetables and fruits of all shapes and sizes.

We’ve also found a pizza cutter a great tool for cutting waffles, breads, pancakes and such.

Of course, other than tools, there are things we can do to help simplify and we’re working on finding more of those as we try and find a routine for us and the boys.

What about you? What have you found to simplify things at home?

I love the apple-peeler. I use it almost everyday!

A purchase I made recently for the home: a down-filled duvet and duvet cover. I thought I bought this as a selfish move (I WANT one), but it now takes me only 3 seconds to make the bed, instead of 5 minutes of straightening sheets, tucking in blankets, etc. My life is simplified!

I also have two good heat-proof spatulas…they can be used when I bake a cake, when I’m frying eggs, to serve rice…multiple uses, reducing my need for other utensils.

I’m finding that sometimes it is better to have one GREAT thing than a bunch of sub-standard things. Probably my next purchase is two really sharp, well-made knives, one big, one small. I will be able to donate all my other sub-standard knives, clearing up lots of space in my utensil drawer.

    • Excellent! We went with a big comforter when we first get married. We simply pull up the sheet, comforter and throw the pillows on. Only takes a couple minutes at that.

And a great set of knifes is a super help as well. Keep them sharp and you can save yourself a lot of stress, time and energy as well.
