The Simple Manifesto #10 – Get rid of the big items
This is part of our series on The Simple Living Manifesto. We invite you to join us on the journey.
The 10th idea in the manifesto is:
Get rid of the big items. There’s tons of little clutter in our lives, but if you start with the big items, you’ll simplify your life quickly and in a big way. Read more.
If you rent storage space because you can’t fit all your stuff in your home, recognize this as God’s way of telling you that you have too much stuff. – John December
That’s a great convicting idea for me!
Laurie and I have been pretty good (in my mind) about limiting big item purchases.
As soon as we were married we cleaned out much of my personal rented storage space — getting rid of much of what was in it. And once we purchased our home (a few months later), we finished cleaning out the storage space, purging even more.
We’ve also made a practice of finding a new home (i.e. donate or give away) for at least one or two pieces of furniture anytime we’ve purchased something new.
As a more recent sign of this practice, Laurie purchased a new laptop computer over the weekend, so I plan on selling my older laptop on e-Bay or Craigslist and switching to her old laptop ASAP.
I think that’s the biggest tip I can offer, when you’re getting something new — find a new home at least one other thing.
John December offers several other pointers for purging those larger items:
- Get rid of unused major appliances, furniture, and vehicles as soon as possible.
- Question the need to have a car.
- Reconsider the need for a vacation home or property.
- Ask yourself if you really need sport boats, vehicles, and other large pieces of equipment.
What do you think? Would you be willing/able to give up a car or other big items to simplify your life?
